Located in the majestic Ikara – Flinders Ranges National Park, South Australia, Wilpena Pound Resort and Ikara Safari Camp is 430kms north of Adelaide. This extraordinary landscape is 800 million years old and has been home to Adnyamathanha people for tens of thousands of years.

The appeal is the unique beauty of this landscape with its Aboriginal history, ancient geological formations, rich colours and textures, open spaces, clear air and abundant wildlife. The Ikara – Flinders Ranges are home to nearly half of South Australia’s 3,100 plant species, more than 120 bird, 86 reptile and 20 mammal species. The vibrant colours of the 800 million year old quartzite and limestone outcrop that is the Flinders are truly spectacular.

The Wilpena Pound Resort Visitor Information Centre offers a wide range of tours and activities showcasing this extraordinary landscape. From scenic flights over Wilpena Pound and Lake Eyre, guided 4WD tours, guided Aboriginal cultural tours, mountain bike hire and self explore walking trails, there are plenty of ways to explore the region.

Wilpena Pound Resort is the only accommodation located within the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park, 430km north of Adelaide.

The hotel rooms are suitable for couples or families, and sleep from 2 to 6 people. The larger deluxe rooms have kitchenettes should you wish to self cater.

The Wilpena Pound Campground has 40 powered campsites suitable for caravans, campervans, camper-trailers and tents, as well as over 300 unpowered bush campsites.

 

Wilpena Pound Resort boast two accessible hotel rooms – the Aroona rooms which sleep 3 people and the deluxe Heysen rooms sleeps 4 people.

The campground has an accessible bathroom located at our Bus Bay abolution block which is located in the middle of the unpowered camping area

    Yura Udnyu Aboriginal Cultural Walk

    The Yura Udnyu walking tour (“yura” being the name for Adnyamathanha people and “udnyu” meaning white) to Old Wilpena Station and the Ikara monument, covers the intertwining histories of Aboriginal and European cultures. Learn about the diversity of the land, native animals, native bush-tucker, and uncover the rich history and mystique of ancient and contemporary Aboriginal culture. Walk along Wilpena Creek past magnificent river red gums with stunning views of Wilpena Pound in the distance. Walk along Wilpena Creek past magnificent stands of river red gums with stunning views of the Pound wall in the distance. As you pass through the station gate you will step back 150 years to the early days of the pastoral runs. Explore a world of improvisation, dogged self-sufficiency and a powerful instinct for survival. Learn how the land changed with European settlement and how present day pastoralists and park managers are dealing with those changes.     Scenic Flight - Wilpena Pound 30 Minute

    The 30 minute scenic flight takes you slightly further than the 20 minute, and completes a circuit of Wilpena Pound where your pilot will point out the Elder Range, Edeowie Gorge, Heysen Range, Lake Torrens, Bunyeroo Gorge, Brachina Gorge, St Mary Peak and the Pound Gap. You will clearly see how the Flinders Ranges appears to be a backbone on the landscape - an extraordinary sight and great for photographers. Operates: Daily

    Scenic Flight - Wilpena Pound One Hour

    This flight takes you beyond Wilpena Pound over the Western Plains, Parachilna township, Parachilna Gorge, Blinman township and Copper Mine, the Bunkers Range and Skytrek 4WD track. You will see clearly the backbone shaped Flinders Ranges and the varying colours and textures of this ancient and beautiful landscape. Operates: Daily

    4WD Tour - Mining Mysteries & Outback History

    Travel to Blinman (highest town in South Australia) and explore the old copper mine, and wander the streets of this historic town. Indulge in lunch at the famous Blinman Hotel, a true Aussie outback pub. Travel home via Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Learn of the geological history and seek the rare Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. Full day tour with morning tea and lunch provided.

    Scenic Flight - Wilpena Pound 20 Minute

    The 20 minute scenic flight provides a fantastic view of our surrounds where you will see Wilpena Pound from the air with the resort nestled in among the River Red Gums just near the Pound Gap. You will also see the Elder Range, Edeowie Gorge, Lake Torrens, the Heysen Range and St Mary Peak. Operates: By arrangement.

    Scenic Flight - 4 Hour Lake Eyre + Muloorina Station

    Enjoy excellent views of Outback South Australia with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge. Pass over Parachilna, the township of Marree and awe-inspiring Lake Eyre. After marvelling at the vastness of Lake Eyre, land at Muloorina Station, a remote 400,000 hectare property south of Lake Eyre. The return flight passes over the Leigh Creek open-cut coal fields and the Gammon Ranges. Operates: Daily

    Scenic Flight - 6 hour Lake Eyre & WIlliam Creek

    Excellent views of outback South Australia beginning with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and Brachina Gorge. Pass over Parachilna, the Leigh Creek open-cut coal fields, the township of Marree, Muloorina Station and the awe-inspiring Lake Eyre. After marvelling at the wonders of Lake Eyre, land at the remote town of William Creek for lunch (population 10 at last count).     4WD Tour - Time Travel and Gorgeous Gorges

    Australia has the world's oldest visible geology on Earth and much of this can be found in the Flinders Ranges. The gorges around Wilpena Pound Resort provide an ancient and fascinating history of the Flinders Ranges, and are visible in the fossil layers and referred to as the ‘Corridor Through Time’. On this tour, you will also learn about Adnyamathanha Dreaming, which is still very strong in traditional Yarta (land). Explore more than 100 million years of this history as well as marveling at the rugged beauty of Brachina and Bunyeroo Gorges. Search for Yellow Footed Rock Wallabies and enjoy sweeping views of Bunyeroo Valley and the eastern wall of Wilpena Pound. Visitors will learn about the rugged mountains including the moss rocks with their contrasting colours and the ever-changing flora of the area, especially after the rain.     Sunset Spectacular

    Tour is approximately two hours and includes beverages and canapés. Observe the changing colours as the sun sets over Wilpena Pound and the Flinders Ranges. Marvel at this vast ancient landscape from a spectacular local lookout point as your Aboriginal guide tells traditional stories of the formation of the Flinders Ranges and the two serpents that formed Ikara (Wilpena Pound). Don’t forget your camera!
