Monarto Zoological Park (also known as the Monarto Zoo) is a 1,500-hectare (3,700-acre) open range zoo located in South Australia administered by the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia (trading as Zoos SA). It is located at Monarto approximately 70 kilometers from Adelaide’s center.

The zoo features several unique attractions, including the new, up-close and personal Lions 360 walk-in cage experience, a drive-through cheetah habitat, a southern white rhinoceros habitat, and Australia’s largest giraffe herd. It is also home to South Australia’s largest re-vegetation project As of 2015 Monarto zoo has achieved one of the most successful giraffe breeding programs in Oceania. Monarto Zoo is a pioneer in Australia for providing a Lions 360 experience for the visitors and this allows the visitors to get within clawing distance from the big cats.

PARTICIPATE IN…

Experience Australia’s only 360 degree lion encounter which gives you a prey’s eye view into the world of these awe-inspiring predators. Guaranteed to leave you in even more awe than when you entered, you’ll walk through a tunnel and emerge within clawing range of one of Australia’s largest lion prides. The bus which leaves twice daily at 11.15am & 1.05pm is wheelchair accessible. Bathroom facilities are available at the visitor centre. The lion encounter takes approx 1hr 20mins.

Non Zoos SA members are required to purchase admission to Monarto Zoo which is not included in the cost of Lions 360. Admission tickets can be purchased online or on arrival at Monarto Zoo.

There are a number of accessible services and facilities available;

  • An accessible bus is in rotation everyday, call ahead to find out the timing on the day. Tip – stay on this bus all the way around, if you get off you may need to wait a long time for it to return.

Due to limited space on buses it is recommended that you leave prams and strollers behind and bring carriers instead. Guide Dogs are not allowed into the Zoo as it is a quarantine zone.

Lions at Bedtime

With a string of exciting births Monarto Zoo proudly cares for one of the largest lion pride in the country and you can meet them up close! Assist the keeper in calling the lions into their night quarters, feed them their evening meal and hear them roar. But the carnivore fun doesn’t stop there, you’ll also meet Australia’s largest Spotted Hyena clan.

Cheetah Experience

This experience allows you to spend some time with our Cheetah and our zoo keepers to learn first-hand about these incredible animals as well as the zoo’s breeding programs for rare and endangered species. Make sure you stay alert for a chance to see our inquisitive Cheetah cubs as they explore their new surroundings! To make your walk safe and enjoyable, all participants must wear enclosed flat footwear. Long pants are desirable and gum boots are not permitted. Please don’t wear red or bright colours as these could cause some unexpected responses from the animal. Please note that all animal experiences require enclosed footwear.

Meerkat Mingle

Mix it with our inquisitive meerkat mob in a unique and fun interactive experience. You’ll enjoy time in their exhibit with a keeper mingling with these playful creatures. Enjoy great photographic opportunities as the meerkats interact with you for some tasty treats. Unfortunately, this experience isn’t wheelchair accessible and surfaces are uneven. Not suitable for pregnant women. Participants will need to be able to stand up from the seated position so reasonable mobility is required. Not suitable for those with nut or egg allergies as peanuts and eggs are used during the encounter. Skirts are not permitted.

A Devilish Native Experience

Meet the Chimps
