Adelaide Zoo is just a 15 minute walk from the central business district and is home to more than 1,800 animals and almost 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited in over eight hectares of magnificent botanic surroundings.

Adelaide Zoo is also home to Wang Wang and Funi, the only Giant Pandas in the Southern Hemisphere.

The zoo’s other major exhibits include the Immersion South East Asian Rainforest, Seal Bay, Australian Rainforest Wetlands walk-through aviary, Nocturnal House, Reptile House, Bug Barn, Children’s Zoo and the Westpac Envirodome, and environmental education centre.

Zookeepers provide daily animal feeds and keeper talks. You can join an Adelaide Zoo free walkabout tour throughout the day – tours depart from various locations every half hour between 9.45am and 3.30pm.

There are great facilities at the Adelaide Zoo! Majority of the walkways and trails are flat and wide and access to the Wisteria Restaurant, Fig Tree Café and Zoo shop are all step free. There is one staircase within the zoo, however these animal enclosures can still be access via another route.

PARTICIPATE IN…

Animal Experiences that are wheelchair friendly are: Chamelon & Co Encounter, Giraffe Feed, Panda & Friends, Hippo Interactive, Big Cat Interactive and the Squirrel Monkey Encounter.

All animal experiences require enclosed footwear. It is recommended to book Animal Experiences in advance to avoid any disappointment.

YOU WILL FIND…

Accessible bathrooms are available throughout the zoo located at: Natures Playground, The Rotunda and The Envirodome. The Natures Playground accessible bathroom is fitted with a full body ceiling hoist. Visitors will need to supply their own loop sling. NOTE that the ceiling hoist SWL is 200kg, this is the maximum weight it can take regardless of the SWL of the sling.

There is no accessible accommodation located in the grounds of the Zoo.

Accessible Parking is available along Plane Tree Drive close to the zoo main entrance. The Botanic Gardens of South Australia owns and operates all parking on Plane Tree Drive.

Zoos SA recognises the national Government issued Companion Card and Carer Australia Card. Free entry is offered for carers accompanying a person with a disability when using one of the approved cards below.

Due to  federal quarantine restrictions the Zoo is unable to allow assistance animals on site. Temporary accommodation for assistance dogs can be provided; however, it is recommend leaving service animals at home. Zoos SA recommends visiting with friends or family who can assist during your visit.

Wheelchairs are available for hire from the Information Desk located near the zoo entrance. The hire cost is $15, which is inclusive of a $10 deposit.

Penguins in Person

Are you a penguin person? Join our keepers for a personal trip to penguin beach and help feed Adelaide Zoo’s own penguin colony. Little penguins are the only species of penguins breeding on the shores of Australia and are truly a local icon, so come and experience life at their level! When feeding the Penguins things can get a bit messy! You may experience a small amount of fish blood and scales on your clothes and shoes. Please note the cost of Penguins in Person does not include admission to the Zoo.

Chameleon & Co Encounter

Learn about our colourful Chameleons and their curious friends in the Westpac Envirodome. You’ll enjoy getting up close and feeding these friendly reptiles. Bookings can be made online or on the day of your visit. To check availability on the day, see one of our friendly Zoo Shop staff. *All of our brave participants will be required to hold a live cricket or cockroach during the feeding experience. Giraffe Feed

Ever wanted to hand-feed a gentle giant? Now’s your chance! You can feed our beautiful Giraffe girls, Dharba and Kimya, for just $12.50. This exciting new experience is open to 20 participants a day and can be booked online or on the day of your visit (subject to availability). Get closer than ever before to these majestic animals on your next visit to Adelaide Zoo! All children under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult.

Coati Encounter

Join our keeper and coatis for some capers in their enclosure where you’ll get to help feed and enrich these fascinating and inquisitive little girls. VIP Panda

Adelaide Zoo proudly cares for Australia’s only Giant Pandas, Wang Wang and Fu Ni, and with VIP Panda you can go behind the scenes with their keepers for an exclusive opportunity to meet the famous and adorable pair. You’ll get to venture into their private quarters, assist the keepers as the pandas undergo their daily training and health checks and experience a rare chance to hand feed a panda. Learn more about our Giant Panda conservation program over morning tea with the keepers as Wang Wang and Fu Ni explore their exhibit and enjoy their breakfast.

Meerkat Encounter

Mix it with our inquisitive meerkat mob in a unique and fun interactive experience. You’ll enjoy time in their exhibit with a keeper mingling with these playful creatures. Enjoy great photographic opportunities as the meerkats interact with you for some tasty treats. Please note the cost of Meerkat Encounter does not include admission to the Zoo. Unfortunately, this experience isn’t wheelchair accessible and surfaces are uneven. Not suitable for pregnant women. Participants will need to be able to stand up from the seated position so reasonable mobility is required. Not suitable for those with nut or egg allergies as peanuts and eggs are used during the encounter. Skirts are not permitted.

Cockatoo Encounter

Join the keeper in entering the home of our Australian parrots, including Palm Cockatoos and Red-Tail Black Cockatoos to name just a few. You’ll enjoy getting to know the unique personalities of our cockies whilst learning more about the species and providing them some of their daily treats.
